Schindler’s 2019 Holiday Safety Tips
This holiday season, more and more people will be crowding elevators and escalators to travel and shop. Here are 12 safety tips to follow this season to make sure your holidays stay as jolly as possible:
- Never try to stop a closing elevator door. Instead, ask a fellow rider to push the “door open” button or wait for the next car.
- When inside an elevator, make sure to keep all clothing and loose items away from the door, so to avoid getting stuck.
- If an elevator stalls, DO NOT climb out. Use the phone or alarm button to ask for help and wait for qualified assistance to arrive.
- Once inside an elevator, move away from the doors to create a clear path for those entering and exiting the elevator.
- Never step on an escalator going in the opposite direction.
- If using wheelchairs, strollers, luggage or shopping carts, take an elevator rather than an escalator. If it has wheels, it should not be on an escalator.
- Always leave one hand free to hold the escalator hand rail for the duration of the ride.
- Do not wear open-toed shoes on escalators.
- Hesitating while exiting an escalator is potentially unsafe for you and the riders behind you. As you step off the escalator, do so promptly and keep moving.
- Should any issue arise while on an escalator, push one of the nearby “stop” buttons to halt the machine and alert on-site staff to remedy the issue.
- When exiting or entering an elevator, always watch your step and make sure the car has leveled with the floor before proceeding, and notify building staff to resolve any leveling issue.
- Hold children firmly by the arm or by their free hands on an escalator. Never let a child sit on the stairs.
To ensure this year’s holidays run smoothly, remember to be alert and careful while riding elevators and escalators. From our Schindler family to yours, we wish you a very happy and safe holiday season!
