Schindler offering comprises IOT-enabled elevator and escalator operations, preventive maintenance, and innovative building access systems including facial recognition and mobile access.

Hong Kong – 19 October 2018. On 18 October, 2018 Schindler hosted a technology event in Hong Kong to introduce revolutionary IOT solutions aimed at answering the city’s needs for smart mobility. Schindler gave its guests a glimpse of all that can be achieved by capitalizing on the power of digital technology.

While Hong Kong’s building transportation system currently ranks as one of the best in the world, Hong Kong’s Smart City Blueprint highlights that more investment in innovation and technology is required to ensure the city will rightfully maintain its status as a world-class Smart City.

For the last 10 years, Schindler has been working on building a digital platform that will bring elevators and escalators to life. This technology, named Schindler Ahead, makes use of a powerful IOT-platform to analyze cloud-based data in real time, so that potential issues can be anticipated and resolved before they occur. It also provides operators and building managers with real time status reports, and tailored apps that enable them to check on operational performance and commercial data to better manage their equipment portfolio.

Innovations from the Schindler Ahead partner ecosystem ensures the equipment is future-proof through regular Over The Air (OTA) updates via the Schindler Cloud. With continuous updates and the use of technologies such as firewalls, program encapsulation and encryption techniques, Schindler Ahead complies with the highest standards of data privacy such as ISO 2700X and the National Institute of Standards to ensure the security of the equipment data.

As described by guest speaker, Eric Pang, Deputy Director / Trading Services of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, “with the advance in communication technology, lifts and escalators can be connected to the internet or the cloud – becoming part of the “Internet of Things - IoT”, thereby making it possible to continuously monitor the operating status of the equipment. With emerging innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, deep learning, etc., performance as well as end-of-life failure can be precisely predicted, allowing repairs or replacements be done ahead of breakdown.”

In addition, Schindler has also developed intelligent access solutions, including myPORT, a unique smartphone-based service that provides building users with higher security and offers seamless personalized transit within buildings, as well as facial recognition access systems for greater convenience of movement.
