Schindler is to supply 339 escalators and elevators for a major new subway system in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul. The 22km Kadikoy-Kartal line will provide a crucial transport axis for the heavily populated Asian half of the city.
The contract, booked last year, consists of 272 escalators and 67 elevators. They are due to be installed in the 16 stations along the Kadikoy-Kartal line by the end of 2010, before the system is handed over to the city authorities at the end of March 2011.
The escalators range in length from three to nearly 20 meters and are fitted with special materials and features, such as stainless steel landing platforms and balustrades to provide protection from the elements. Most of those installed indoors have glass balustrades, and some even have steel on one side and glass on the other.
The new metro line will provide a safe, clean and efficient public transport system for the Asian half of the city, where most of the population lives. It will also serve as key transport link to the city's European side, where most companies and jobs are located.

The new line is part of major expansion of the public transport network aimed at easing congestion in Istanbul, which has a population of 13 million and accounts for 27% of national GDP. Schindler has already supplied escalators for the Istanbul's main airport, as well as for stations along another metro line that runs under the Bosphorus.
