The Schindler Global Award (SGA) 2019 student competition is now open for registration.

Registration is open from 16 July 2018 until 18 January for students in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning programs, enrolled in their final bachelor degree year or any masters degree year. Students can participate individually or in teams, and each entry must have a faculty supervisor. Entries are due 30 January 2019.

The SGA is the leading urban design competition with a focus on mobility. It is an ideas competition, intended to engage students in formulating a response to complex conditions in cities across the globe.

Mumbai is the competition site for 2019. An estimated 22.8 million people live in the city now, and that number will increase. The theme of the SGA 2019 is “Leapfrogging Development: Urban Transformation in Mumbai”. The SGA asks students for entries focused on how urban transformation in Mumbai can ensure a resource responsible, livable future for its inhabitants.

An international jury of renowned experts will evaluate the entries and allocate awards, with a total prize sum of USD 105,000. The jury includes Rahul Mehrotra of Harvard University, Nathalie de Vries of MVRDV, Ricky Burdett of LSE Cities, Momoyo Kajima of Atelier Bow-Wow, Shipra Narang Suri of UN-Habitat, among others.

The SGA 2019 is held under the leadership of the Schindler Group, in collaboration with the ETH Zurich, Chair of Architecture and Urban Design, Professor Kees Christiaanse. Prof. Christiaanse is SGA Co-Chair together with Prof. Peter Staub, of the University of Liechtenstein. The competition is supported by the expertise of the Mumbai-based Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI).

This is the third SGA award cycle, following competitions based in Shenzhen, China (2015) and São Paulo, Brazil (2017). Hundreds of students from around the world competed in the past SGA award cycles. The SGA offers students a unique chance to engage in a global exchange about urban design.

The SGA competition website serves as a platform for ideas, where a range of interviews and articles will be published throughout the duration of the competition. News and updates will be posted regularly.
