Why did we choose to do an activation around a subject that is considered rather sensitive in the region?
It is simply because empowering women with the knowledge they need to be equipped about early detection, dismissing myths surrounding the disease and the steps they need to take in order to receive proper healthcare and counsel, are key to nipping breast cancer in its very bud. What makes such initiatives even more relevant to the UAE landscape is the fact that breast cancer accounts for the second leading cause of death in women, according to the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, which can be reduced by 98% if the disease is detected and treated at an early stage.
Under the theme “Be Schindler, be aware”, 20 brave women took part in the Pink October activation, where they received training on the basics of breast self-examination (BSE) and underwent clinical examinations which resulted in few mammography and ultrasound referrals. The event was well received by the ladies, who appreciated the management’s constant efforts to empower women and
care for their wellbeing.
For many ladies who are busy planning and building their careers and families, breast health does not seem to be a priority. It is through such awareness events that we can dispel the myths and start an open conversation about women’s health concerns that should be on top of their to do list. Knowledge is power, and sharing lessons learned in advocacy is key to dispel stigma and misconceptions about breast cancer, and thus, empower women to be successful leaders in their communities.
A heartfelt thank you to all Schindler MENA’s courageous ladies who pledged to be proactive and be part of the event despite their busy schedule, knowing that some had to come all the way from Abu Dhabi.
Special thanks to Philippe Boue (Managing Director MENA) for continuously supporting all the initiatives that empower and inspire the team.
