A new way to disinfect handrails: an advanced sanitation solution for escalators and moving walks helping prevent the spread of viruses and providing safe travel for passengers. The Schindler handrail Ultra UV device was officially released in March 2020

The whole world is currently facing the novel coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19). The question of how to effectively disinfect surfaces and reduce the spread of the virus has become a hot topic. As a leading global manufacturer of elevators, escalators, and moving walks, as well as a provider of related services, Schindler has launched a new solution, the handrail Ultra UV device. Now, manual cleaning is no longer the only method for disinfecting handrails.

Schindler handrail Ultra UV device

The Schindler handrail Ultra UV device was officially released in March 2020. It can be added to new installations as an option. Furthermore, it is suitable for jobsite-friendly modernization of existing units.

Specifically, the device is used to efficiently disinfect the handrails of escalators and moving walks in order to suppress the spread of viruses. Schindler's handrail Ultra UV device uses germicidal UVC light to irradiate the handrails at a short distance, only 15 mm, ensuring that bacteria and viruses are effectively killed. With this physical disinfection process using UVC LED technology, handrails are disinfected in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. The device is installed inside the escalator or moving walk to ensure passenger safety. Utilizing the circular motion of the handrails, these are automatically disinfected as they circulate.

The effectiveness of UVC disinfection is widely recognized

UVC has been found to be highly effective as a germicide. It directly damages the DNA1) and RNA2), which are the genetic materials of bacteria and viruses. Coronaviruses are positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. Based on the destruction of RNA nucleic acids by UV rays, certain doses of UV radiation can kill the novel coronavirus. The Diagnosis and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus infected pneumonia study (sixth trial version) issued by the National Health Commission of China clearly confirms the sensitivity of the virus to UV rays.

Schindler's handrail Ultra UV device can be used for killing viruses during outbreak season, and it can also be used for killing harmful bacteria and parasites at all times.

Schindler offers two options for customers: Ultra UV and Ultra UV PRO. Compared with the Ultra UV single UV device, Ultra UV PRO uses a dual UV device to improve the efficiency of disinfection.
