Europe's tallest building, with 20 state-of-the-art Schindler 7000 elevators, is certain to put Moscow on the modern architectural map when it is completed in 2008.

Mobility in the taller of the building's two towers will be provided by the 7000s, which are to be equipped with a traffic management system that identifies passengers and guides them to whichever elevator is taking the fastest route to their destination. Schindler is the world leader in destination control systems, having installed over 3000 worldwide.

Vital statistics

The tower has impressive vital statistics – with the antenna it will stretch almost half a kilometre into the sky (448m to be exact), leaving the rest of Europe's skyscrapers in the shade.

It will also totally transform the Russian capital's skyline. Rising out of the Moscow City site – one of the most important urban developments in the country – the structure consists of two towers in spectacular glass coats.

They stand on a podium, itself to be equipped with 15 low-rise Schindler elevators and 16 escalators. Completing the building's traffic network is a spectacular glass column between the towers, where 2-3 panoramic elevators will whisk passengers skywards. The contract for these has yet to be awarded.

Eight metres per second

Designed by architects Peter P Schweger and Sergei Tschoban, the taller tower stands at 354m with 93 floors; its sister structure - more diminutive at 242m – has 62. Passengers using the Schindler 7000s in the higher tower will be transported at speeds of up to 8 m/s.

Schindler's engineers can design elevators capable of velocities well in excess of that. But the Top Range Division, which handles all of Schindler's high-rise projects, says speeds of more than 10 m/s are not practical because of the gravitational forces acting on the passengers.

Gravity

"Travelling horizontally – in a car or train, for instance – the force of gravity is constant," says the division's marketing chief, Daniela Corti. "But travelling vertically at speed, one is subjected to significant tidal forces which make the ride very unpleasant at speeds of over 10 m/s."

In the completed Federation Tower, many activities will take place in the podium, which will host entertainment facilities, shops and restaurants, as well as a conference and events center. The towers will contain luxury offices and apartments and a five-star Hyatt hotel.
