Airport rail link for Delhi
Schindler is also supplying 53 escalators for the Delhi Airport Metro Express Line (DAMEL), the latest extension to the capital's expanding metro system. The new 23km line, scheduled for completion in October 2010, will create a rail link to Indira Gandhi International airport. Three metro stations out of the six along the new line will have baggage check-in facilities for airline passengers. Schindler's installations are due to start being installed from December 2009.
The new lines for both the Mumbai and Delhi metros have been contracted to Reliance Infrastructure, one of India's leading industrial conglomerates. Fountainhead architects are responsible for the design.
Schindler is a long-standing partner of the Delhi metro, having supplied escalators for capital's first line, which opened back in 2002. Today, the metro carries 850,000 passengers per day and is renowned for its green credentials, having received ISO-14001 certification for environmental management.
