The systems and processes of mobility guide capital, labor and knowledge through urban areas. Mobility must be planned as an integral part of the urban fabric. Well-designed infrastructure can enable equal and accessible cities.
From the scale of individual actors to governments, from public space to the private sphere, everything is made possible through mobility – both horizontal and vertical. The cities of the globe are nodes in a network of multiple mobility modes, from road and rail to air and sea. The impact of this on governments, societies, ecosystems and economies has no boundary. Mobility networks traverse increasingly complex geopolitical terrain, financial systems and cultural contexts – and they also connect the simple functions of everyday life for billions of people. They are some of the most robust urban elements, ones that endure from generation to generation.
Mobility infrastructure is crucial to the planning and design of current and future cities, at all scales. The Schindler Global Award competition asks the students of today to use design to leverage the power of mobility for positive urban development.
